Lesson 010 · Does It Work? · 3 min
Six buttons, zero clicks
Principle: One main action per screen.
1 · The crime
What goes wrong
A dental clinic's homepage has six buttons in a row, all the same size and colour: Book, Call, Email, Prices, Team, Directions. Visitors hesitate, and many leave without pressing any.
2 · The law
One main action per screen.
- Every page should have one main action, the thing you most want visitors to do.
- Make that action the most visible element: colour, size and position.
- Remove obstacles: hidden prices, long forms, broken booking, replies that take days.
3 · The tool
Check it yourself, for free
- The squint test: blur your eyes or a screenshot. Does the main button still stand out?
- A stopwatch: time how long it takes a friend to book or contact you.
- Your analytics: which page do people leave from most?
4 · The fix
Step by step
- Pick one main action per page and give it the brand colour.
- Turn secondary actions into quiet links.
- Cut forms down to the fields you really need.
- Show prices or a starting price; it builds trust and filters enquiries.
5 · Homework
Ask someone to do one task on your site (book, buy or contact). Time them and note where they hesitated.
